As the flagship of the Honda utility vehicle lineup, the Honda Pilot has built quite the reputation and legacy for itself through the years. Having first hit the road in 2003, it’s actually one of the younger models on the lineup but has still built itself up as one of the best options to choose from. That’s quite similar to the Volkswagen Atlas, which was only just introduced a few years ago in 2018 but has already become one of the most popular VW models to choose from. We thought we’d see how these two models fare against one another by pitting the 2021 Honda Pilot against the 2021 Volkswagen Atlas in a side-by-side comparison.

Just one glance at the table above will show you just how similar to one another these two crossover utility vehicles are. We started things off by looking at performance, highlighting horsepower in the first row. The Pilot LX is capable of generating 45 horsepower more than the Atlas X, which is a pretty sizeable advantage when it comes down to it. It’s not a game-changer or anything, but you would likely notice a difference in pick up driving the two vehicles one after the other.
In the second row, we look at fuel economy, one of the most important aspects of any vehicle on today’s market. Despite the superior power rating, the Pilot once again gets the nod in this row by achieving an extra mile per gallon across highway and city driving combined. Again, not a huge difference, but you’ll certainly save some change at the gas pump in the long run.
The second half of the table turned away from performance to look at space. The third row highlights cargo capacity, where the Volkswagen Atlas gets its first advantage by offering an extra 4.1 cubic feet of space to fill with cargo or whatever you need to bring along. The Honda Pilot does fire back with one final advantage of its own though by offering a whole extra seat.
